Angler Skin Care & Sun Protection

1 out of 5 Americans

Most anglers spend an absurd amount of time on the water under the rays of the sun. For much of the 20th century people let the sun beat down on their skin without knowing the real damage they were doing to themselves. It is estimated that 1 & 5 Americans will develop a form of skin cancer. Melanoma is the deadliest cancer and fisherman who fight the sun trying to fill the live well increase their chances if proper measures aren’t taken. More people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the US than all other cancers combined. Luckily most anglers have caught on and are taking preventative methods to make sure they win their fight with the sun.

Skin Care Is In

It wasn’t that long ago tan skin and dark complexion was in, but with the rising risks of melanoma it is slowly dying out. Those who are spending daily hours on the water without taking care of their skin before hand are more than likely also stimulating their chances for skin cancer. When UV rays hit the skin they penetrate our cells so deeply it begins to change our DNA.  Despite popular belief a skin tan can be achieved with the use of sunscreen.

Skin Statistics

It’s estimated that the number of new melanoma cases diagnosed in 2019 will increase by 7.7 percent

The number of melanoma deaths is expected to decrease by 22 percent in 2019.

On average, a person’s risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had more than five sunburns.

Regular daily use of an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen reduces the risk of developing melanoma by 50 percent.

The vast majority of melanomas are caused by the sun. In fact, one UK study found that about 86 percent of melanomas can be attributed to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
